Bahamas Crisis Centre Director Dr. Sandra Dean-Patterson estimated that three out of every four victims of sexual violence do not report the matter to the police. She said many do not report the offenses as a result of shame, fear, guilt, and “the belief that they are going to be talked about or stigmatized”.

“All of us need to do more so that victims can feel like they live in a country where their circumstances and situations are taken seriously and that justice is swift,” Dean-Patterson said.

“I think there is a lot of work for all of us to do and that is why we keep pushing for the gender-based violence strategic plan to be addressed and that we deal effectively with all of these things.
